Özet

This study experimentally addresses the symbiotic design approach shaped by the simultaneous use of physical design tools and

generative artificial intelligence-based systems within architectural design practice. Nowadays, digital tools offer opportunities

such as rapid visualisation, data analysis and alternative scenario generation in architectural production. Physical tools, especially

models, contribute to the design process with contributions such as tactile feedback, spatial intuition and direct engagement with

context. The use of these two different tools together and in interaction in the design process creates new opportunities in creative

production processes. Within the scope of the study, the effect of the symbiotic relationship between the model and generative

artificial intelligence tools on the design process was tested.

Within the scope of the study, a workshop was conducted with the participation of undergraduate architecture students at Bursa

Uluda University Faculty of Architecture. The students produced physical models based on two different design scenarios and at

the same time transformed their design ideas interactively using generative artificial intelligence supported visualisation tools. In

the first phase of the workshop, students were given a predefined context and were expected to design within the constraints of

this context. In the second phase of the workshop, they were allowed to experience a more independent design process by creating

their own contexts. The visuals, number of interventions, production strategies and student feedbacks obtained throughout the

whole process were systematically collected and analysed. The findings show that the combined use of physical and digital tools

increased students' participation in the design process, diversified their decision-making skills and provided significant diversity in

the outputs. The findings show that both tools work in a complementary manner and that this symbiotic relationship encourages

both intuitive and analytical thinking in the design process. Quantitative data reveal that the levels of intervention and creative

experimentation were more intense in the second experimental phase. In addition, more original and diversified designs were

produced in the scenario where the context was determined by the student.

In conclusion, the symbiotic design approach, in which physical models and generative artificial intelligence are used together and

simultaneously, offers new tools in architectural education and supports the depth of creative processes. It is predicted that this

approach will gain more applicability in interdisciplinary design environments in the future
