Özet

This study aims to investigate the spatial patterns of cholera cases during the 1866 outbreak in Poznań, which lasted from 18 June to 22 October 1866 and was the city’s largest cholera epidemic in the 19th century. Using the first GIS-based spatial analysis, we draw on individual information on deaths in 1866 from parish books (N=2,622), covering all deaths that year, including cholera fatalities. At that time, Poznań was enclosed within a fortress ring, which limited its spatial growth, while population density reached around 7,000 persons/km². The addresses of the deceased were used to map their places of residence, revealing that spatial disadvantage, high population density, social inequality, and poor hygiene influenced the epidemic’s distribution. This interdisciplinary approach enhances our understanding of historical demography and provides a novel methodological perspective.
