Özet

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate conditions such as falls, balance problems, functional independence, and reductions in physical activity and performance that may arise due to sarcopenia. Methods A total of 572 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years living in Turkey were screened for sarcopenia according to the EWGSOP2 criteria. Pain, cognitive status, fall risk, functional independence, physical performance, nutritional status, sarcopenia, and physical activity were assessed using validated instruments. Individuals were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale, cognitive status was evaluated with the Standardized Mini-Mental Test, fall situations were assessed using the Fall Risk Self-Assessment Scale, functional independence was measured with the Functional Independence and Strain Scale, physical performance was evaluated with the Short Physical Performance Battery, nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment, sarcopenia screening was conducted with the Sarcopenia Screening Test, and physical activities were evaluated using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly. Results Among the screened participants, 50 older adults met the EWGSOP2 criteria for sarcopenia, including 31 with sarcopenia and 19 with severe sarcopenia. Statistically significant differences were found in VAS scores (t = −2.190; p < 0.05), “FRSAS Total” scores (U = 43.5; p < 0.01), “FIDS Total” scores (t = −4.522; p < 0.01), “SPPB – Walking Speed Test” scores (U = 9; p < 0.001), “SPPB – Sitting-Standing” scores (U = 35; p < 0.001), “SPPB – Balance” scores (U = 49; p < 0.01), and “SPPB Total” scores (U = 1; p < 0.001) among individuals with sarcopenia, according to sarcopenia level groups. Conclusion The severity of sarcopenia in older adults should be assessed, as it was associated with fall risk, functional independence, balance, and physical performance. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive assessment and individualized physiotherapy interventions to support healthy aging. Clinical number trial NCT06012422.
