In this study, cerebral effects of propofol and isoflurane anaesthesia under hypothermia were investigated in Wistar rats (weighing 275-350 g) after diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI). Rats were subjected to impact- accelerated weight drop model of TBI and hypothermia (33-34°C) was induced 45 min after TBI for 180 minutes. After tracheostomy all rats were mechanically ventilated and Group I (n:8) received 70 % N2O in O2 and isoflurane (1-1.5 %), Group II (n:8) received 70 % N2O in O2 and propofol infusion (0.2 mg/kg/min). Mean arterial pressure (MAP), intracranial pressure (ICP), local cerebral blood flow (CBF) with Laser Doppler flowmeter, brain and rectal temperatures were monitored continuously. In Group I, MAP, and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) decreased significantly (p<0.05, p<0.01) but ICP and CBF showed no change. In Group II, ICP was decreased (p<0.05), while MAP and CBF showed no significant change. Also, there was increase in CPP in Group II (p<0.05). The results suggest that, propofol anaesthesia has advantageous effects than isofluran anaesthesia under hypothermia.
