Özet

The aim of this study is to investigate different grades students' understanding levels of the concepts about the sinking and floating. A total of 97 different grades students taken from a primary and a high school, were asked these concepts in using four open ended-multiple choice questions developed by the researchers. Obtained data showed that in all grades students had low understanding levels on these concepts. The concept of the density which has centralize role in understanding sinking and floating concepts and consisting of volume and mass are not understood by students. Eurthermore, the students didn't clearly understand the relationships between density-pressure-volume and density-volume-buoyancy. They did not make relationships among these concepts. One-way ANOVA was used to determine differences between students' grades. F ratio shows that the mean differences for the students' grades were significant (F(3,93) = 16.98, p<.05) at different levels of schooling. However, there were not significant differences between grades of 7 and 8, 10 and 11.
