Cut-pile wool carpets were subject to straight-walk and turning-walk wear trials. Worn samples were photographed and the direction of pile lay was mapped. Fibres were extracted from worn tufts and examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Damage was classified in eight forms from incipient distortion to clear kink bands and cracks. The main cause of failure was axial compression fatigue, which leads to sharp kinks in fibres, and not multiple splitting as previously suggested.
