The thermally induced electron transfer reaction of the saccharin complex with iron(II) in the solid state was investigated by using DTA, DSC, TG, IR, EPR, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic and XRPD measurements. Experimental data suggest that an intramolecular electron transfer reaction occurs during dehydration of the complex. The electron transfer reaction leads to dimerization of the dehydrated complex by the formation of hydroxo bridges. The probable mechanistic pathway of the reaction is also proposed.
