Özet
This chapter elucidates how needs analysis can inform the design of responsive study-abroad programs for international students in Türkiye. Drawing on qualitative questionnaire data collected from students with diverse linguistic, academic, and cultural backgrounds, this study explores how students conceptualize social and cultural integration and how these meanings may shape their adjustment experiences. Rather than treating integration as a fixed or measurable outcome, the findings revealed that students attributed diverse and uneven meanings to the concept, reflecting their individual trajectories and socio-cultural positioning. Notably, references to racism emerged spontaneously across multiple sections of the questionnaire, indicating that discrimination is experienced and interpreted in complex, context-bound ways. By foregrounding students’ own definitions and meaning-making processes, this chapter challenges institutionally imposed assumptions about adaptation and satisfaction. It argues that needs analysis should be understood not merely as a diagnostic tool, but as a conceptual and programmatic framework for designing differentiated, context-sensitive study-abroad programs. Hence, this chapter contributes to a shift from generalized internationalization models toward more ethically grounded and student-informed approaches to international education design.
