 Abstract

In this study, based on the Population Register of Burdur Kaza dated H. 1256 (A.D. 1841), the demographic characteristics,

migrations, and settlements of the population are examined from the perspective of historical geography within a spatial

framework. The data were processed using retrospective and comparative methods and were aligned with the space of the

past through a retrogressive perspective. In the kaza, a total of 52 settlements were identified, consisting of the city, villages,

farms, communities, and taifes. The majority of the population consisted of young dependents and the active age groups.

The population, represented by a broad-based pyramid, exhibits the characteristics of a classical agricultural society. While

the Muslim population migrated outside the kaza primarily for settlement, education, and military service, the non-Muslims

relocated mainly for trade. Those who migrated into the kaza mostly came from nearby sanjaks, kazas, and settlements.

Moreover, within the kaza, it is also possible to observe migrations from rural areas to the city as well as from one rural area

to another. In 1841, three Muslim communities and two Armenian tribes in the kaza were leading a nomadic life.
