A Comprehensive Scoping Review on Smart City and Mental Health Historical Evolution, Developments, and Future Directions

Özet

his study presents a comprehensive scoping review examining the intersection between smart cities and mental health to identify research trends, conceptual gaps, and future directions. Despite rapid advancements in both domains, integrative studies linking smart city frameworks with mental health outcomes remain limited. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), a systematic search was conducted across ScienceDirect, PubMed, Europe PMC, Web of Science, and Scopus using “smart cit*,” “mental health,” “mental disorder*,” and “psychological resilience” keywords in all fields. Peer-reviewed interdisciplinary studies published between 1990 and 2025 were included. A total of 1,158 duplicate and 971 unique records were identified and screened through a two-stage process (title/abstract and full-text review). After excluding retracted and inaccessible studies, 98 articles were retained for final analysis. The findings indicate a fragmented research landscape, with limited integration of technical, spatial, and social dimensions. Existing studies remain polarized, focusing either on technological innovations (e.g., artificial intelligence and smart monitoring tools) or on socio-environmental determinants (e.g., demographic factors and greenspace exposure). The review further highlights both opportunities and challenges associated with smart city development. Benefits include improved early diagnosis, personalized interventions, enhanced healthcare access, real-time data integration, and strengthened urban resilience during crises such as COVID-19. However, adverse effects such as surveillance-related anxiety, technology-induced stress, and technostress are also evident. Overall, these findings provide a foundation for identifying research gaps and advancing interdisciplinary approaches to promote mental health in smart urban environments.
