In the secondary education Visual Arts lesson teaching plan, there are acquisitions for the symbolic meanings of the motifs used in Traditional Turkish Arts. The problem of this research is that students acquire these acquisitions based on an element in their lives and how they can attribute their symbolic meanings to different objects. The purpose of the research is to raise awareness of the tree symbol used in traditional Turkish motifs with the example of the olive tree in students who grew up in olive culture. It is thought that if a sample selected from the lives of the students in the teaching of Traditional Turkish motifs included in the Visual Arts lesson acquisitions is started, permanence in learning will be ensured and it will be easier to integrate the learned information into life. The study focuses on the “Tree of Life” motif, which has a wide usage area in Traditional Turkish Arts. “Olive Tree”, which is an important cultural plant for Gemlik, was chosen in the expression of the tree of life motif. The olive is also one of the symbols of the tree of life. In this research, ‘Case Study’, one of the ‘Qualitative Research’ methods, was used. The study group of this research consists of 10th grade students studying at Gemlik Celal Bayar Anatolian High School. A homogeneous sample type was used to determine the study group. The research data were analyzed by thematic analysis method; as a result of the analysis, the themes of “student opinions”, “student awareness”, “student studies” were reached. Art works that emerged under the title of “student works” were evaluated through the document evaluation form and included in the research data. With this reseach, the students reflected their inner world, not the outer world they saw; realized that they can express themselves more freely by ascribing symbolic meanings to seemingly ordinary objects in their art works. This research is considered important in terms of creating awareness of the olive tree example and the tree symbol in traditional Turkish motifs and being effective in providing cultural transfer among students who grew up in olive culture.
