Özet

The kiwifruit was a plant completely unknown in Albania before 1990. The first plants in Albania came from Montenegro in 1994 and were planted in the Lezha district in Komuna Balldre. Until 2002, the kiwifruit was poorly known in the country and its spread was fairly limited. Only a few plantations were established in scattered orchards in Shkodra, close to Montenegro border. In 2002, we started a big project: Agriculture University of Tirana and Biology Institute of Tirana in collaboration with the Greek company "Vitro Hellas", investigated the potential of kiwifruit in Albania. In 2005 a scientific theme was presented, titled: "Adaptation of kiwifruit with climatic conditions in western lowland in Albania". The experimental orchards were established in three districts with different climatic and soil conditions. The main outcome was the determination, under the climatic conditions of our country, of the period required from budbreak until full maturity of kiwifruit, because the kiwifruit needs an annual heat accumulation of about 2800-2900 degrees C Days. Nowadays there is a total of around 60 ha kiwifruit orchards in Albania. The areas with the highest production of kiwifruit are Shkodra, Lezha, Fieri, Berati, Elbasani and Vlora regions. Apart from that, a limited number of kiwifruit plants are grown in many home gardens in Albania.
