Within modern Islamic thought, reformist movements advocating a return to Islam’s foundational sources—particularly the Qurʾān—have been extensively studied. On the one hand, these movements have critically examined interpretations that developed over the course of history, often regarding tradition and the institutionalization of religion as contributing factors to the decline of Muslim societies. On the other hand, they have sought to return to the original sources of Islam and reconstruct religious thought on that basis. The search for the essence of religion and the attempt to recover the Islam of the formative period—often referred to as the Age of Bliss (ʿaṣr al-saʿāda)—ultimately gave rise to Qurʾān-centered approaches.

The manifestation of this reformist tendency in the Shīʿī world, however, displays certain distinctive features. Within the intellectual climate generated by these new approaches, some Shīʿī scholars began to critically examine, from within the tradition, the defining doctrines and assumptions of Twelver Shiʿism. This current of reform initially focused on the critical evaluation of historical reports and traditions but gradually expanded to encompass questions of religious authority and the foundational premises of the sect. Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the scope of this inquiry broadened further, moving beyond sectarian doctrines to address more fundamental questions concerning religion itself, including the nature of the sharīʿa and revelation.

Iran, as is well known, was one of the countries most profoundly affected by the global ideological currents of the 1970s. Within this intellectual and political environment, figures such as ʿAlī Sharīʿatī, Murtaḍā Muṭahharī, Mahdī Bāzargān, and Rūḥ Allāh Khumaynī argued—albeit in different ways—that Shiʿism possessed the conceptual and political resources necessary for ideological revitalization. The principal concern of this study, however, is not how Shiʿism was reinterpreted in the modern period by these prominent figures. Rather, it examines how, and to what extent, Shīʿī scholars and intellectuals critically reassessed the doctrines and assumptions of their own sectarian tradition. Accordingly, ideological interpretations of Shiʿism remain secondary to the present discussion. The primary emphasis is placed on the areas toward which critiques from within the Shīʿī tradition were directed and on the ways in which these critiques deepened and changed direction over time.

The main purpose of this presentation, therefore, is to examine briefly the trajectory of religious revival and reform from the period immediately preceding the 1979 Iranian Revolution to the present, focusing on several representative figures through a qualitative analysis of their writings. A significant feature shared by many of these thinkers is their connection to the ʿulamāʾ: they received a traditional madrasa education and critically reassessed the tradition and literature with which they were intimately familiar from a Qurʾān-centered perspective. It should be noted, however, that Shīʿī reformism encompasses a variety of approaches and intellectual orientations.

In this respect, figures such as Murtaḍā Muṭahharī, ʿAllāma Ṭabāṭabāʾī, Ayatollah Khumaynī, Muḥammad Mufattiḥ, and Sayyid Muḥammad Ḥusayn Bihishtī—who were associated with the Qum seminary and whose reformist projects remained broadly within the established doctrinal boundaries of Twelver Shiʿism—fall outside the primary scope of this study. The strand of Shīʿī reformism examined here may instead be characterized as a current that places the Qurʾān at the center of religious understanding, seeks to eliminate beliefs and practices regarded as superstitious from religious teachings, traditions, and rituals, and endeavors to revive principles that had been marginalized over the course of history, such as jihād and al-amr bi-l-maʿrūf.

Ultimately, this study argues that Shīʿī reformism was not confined to an internal reassessment of sectarian doctrines. Rather, it gradually moved beyond these boundaries and developed into a sustained and increasingly fundamental inquiry into the nature of religion, religious knowledge, authority, the sharīʿa, and revelation itself.
