Plastic products have become ubiquitous in daily life due to their convenience and accessibility. However, they also pose significant environmental, social, health, and economic threats. Recycling difficulties and the slow rate of decomposition in nature are major sustainability concerns. Although the trade of plastic waste only accounts for a small portion of overall plastics production, it has a significant impact on developing countries. This is due to the export of plastic waste from highly developed countries with high levels of plastic production and consumption to less developed countries. It is important to note that this impact is not limited to environmental concerns, but also includes economic and social implications. The objective of this study is to analyze the plastic waste trade in Türkiye. Türkiye holds a significant position in plastic production, and its social and economic sustainability, particularly its environmental sustainability, has been adversely impacted by the rise in plastic waste imports in recent years. The study found a significant increase in Türkiye's plastic waste imports in terms of both value and volume, particularly after China's 2018 ban on plastic waste imports. To mitigate the negative impact of plastic waste on sustainability, Türkiye should consider banning the import of products that are difficult to recycle and improving its recycling facilities and infrastructure.
