After his death in the eighth century of the hijra, al-Shāṭibī was forgotten for a long time, and five centuries after his death, he and especially his work al-Muwāfaqāt were revived in the works with many references. Two claims were often made at the time when he gained popularity: “al-Shāṭibī wrote a new fiqh method with his al-Muwāfaqāt” and “he represents one of the important and founding representatives of purpose-centered thought with this new method he put forward”. The first claim that al-Shāṭibī wrote a new fiqh method with his al-Muwāfaqāt, which is repeated as a fact in almost every work on Shāṭibī and al-Muwāfaqāt, constitutes our article’s subject. In this context, first of all, al-Shāṭibī’s understanding of fiqh method was discussed based on al-Muwāfaqāt’s introductions -because the author, with some exceptions, expressed his views on the fiqh method in the introductions of al-Muwāfaqāt-, then al-Muwāfaqāt was evaluated again with the data obtained from here, and the relationship between al-Muwāfaqāt and fiqh method was tried to be examined. Thus, the analysis of the claim in question was aimed.
Ebû İshâk İbrâhim b. Mûsâ eş-Şâtıbî hicri sekizinci yüzyılda (ö. 790/1388) vefat etmesinin ardından uzun bir süre unutulmuş, vefatından yaklaşık beş asır sonra ise kendisi ve özellikle el-Muvâfaḳāt adlı eseri birçok atıf alarak eserlerde yeniden hayat bulmuştur. Onun popülerlik kazandığı zamanlarda sıklıkla iki iddia dile getirilmiştir: “Şâtıbî’nin el-Muvâfaḳāt ile yeni bir fıkıh usulü eseri telif ettiği” ve “ortaya koyduğu bu yeni usul ile makâsıt/gaye merkezli düşüncenin önemli ve kurucu temsilcilerinden birini teşkil ediyor olması”. Şâtıbî’yi ve el-Muvâfaḳāt’ı konu alan neredeyse her eserde bir vakıa olarak tekrarlanan, Şâtıbî’nin el-Muvâfaḳāt’ı ile yeni bir fıkıh usulü eseri telif ettiğine dair ilk iddia makale konumuzu oluşturmaktadır.
