INNOVATIVE PRACTICES TO IMPROVE EFL READING SKILLS, ss.27-44, 2023 (SSCI)
Reading involves the capacity to grasp written language by comprehending the meanings of words within the context. Words serve as the essential building blocks of language, forming the foundation for all literacy abilities. As a result, the connection between reading and vocabulary is pivotal for fostering literacy development and plays a crucial role in education. Through reading, individuals actively enhance their vocabulary as they encounter words and phrases in their proper context, enabling them to understand their meanings and appropriate usage. This process of exposure and comprehension gradually expands one's repertoire of words and language proficiency. The aim of this chapter is to offer valuable insights into the relationship between reading and vocabulary by building upon research from previous years that centers around reading and vocabulary. The chapter is divided into three primary sections. The first section explores the link between reading and phonemic awareness, the second section examines the connection between reading and word inferencing, and lastly, the third section addresses the relationship between reading and incidental vocabulary learning.
