Abstract

Epoxy-based adhesives play an important role in the formation of the bond between metal-to-metal components. Epoxy adhesives consist of a two-component system: epoxy resin and a hardener (usually amine or anhydride). When these two components are mixed, a chemical reaction begins and polymerization occurs, thus forming a strong bond[1]. As a result of the polymerization process, the epoxy reacts with the hardener and hardens, creating a solid bond between the metal surfaces. This bond provides maximum effect when the surfaces are clean, oil-free and properly prepared. Surface preparation is often required for the successful application of epoxy adhesives; cleaning the surfaces and applying special coatings or primers when necessary will increase bond strength and support long-term performance [2].Epoxy-based metal-to-metal adhesives are known as high-strength adhesives, often used in industrial and engineering applications[3]. Some of the key features of such adhesives are: Epoxy-based adhesives generally offer high strength and create a strong, durable and long-lasting bond between metal-to-metal components[4]. Corrosion resistance is of great importance in metal-to-metal bonding. Epoxy-based adhesives are highly durable even in corrosive environments because they are well compatible with metal surfaces. In addition, these adhesives are generally resistant to various chemicals[5]. These properties provide significant advantages in industrial environments where various chemicals are exposed. Resistance to temperature fluctuations and high temperatures is also a critical factor in metal-to-metal bonding. Epoxy-based adhesives generally have the ability to remain stable over a wide temperature range[6]. In this study, highly functional pol(GMA-co-GMS) copolymers and composites were synthesized. Single-action overlap joints (metal-metal) were prepared and their mechanical performances were investigated. Copolymers were synthesized from epoxy-containing monomers and GMS monomers with high potential for adhesion to surfaces. In addition, different types of metal oxides (alumina Al2O3) were added to increase the mechanical and thermal strength of the polymer. Optimization studies of the chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of these prepared composites were carried out.
