Abstract

Accelerated flex-fatigue testing has been carried out on gel-spun ultra-high-modulus, high-performance polyethylene (HPPE) fibres, under the influence of an applied tension. In addition to measurements of fatigue lifetime, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) were used to investigate the failure morphology. Monitoring of the progressive damage accompanying flex fatigue was carried out by using both techniques. The study concluded that failure occurs mainly as a result of axial splitting and/or fibrillation.
