Abstract

Purpose: In this study, it is aimed at defining the working principles and characteristics of supercapacitors in energy storage systems. In addition, it is aimed to give an important place to supercapacitor development studies through current literature research.Theory and Methods: A comparison of traditional energy storage systems with supercapacitors has been made. Types of supercapacitors and operating principles are explained. In addition, electrode and electrolyte materials were examined, and recent studies were presented with literature research. Results: Supercapacitors have superior properties compared to capacitors and lithium batteries. In addition to the advantages of high power density and long cycle numbers, it is stated that it has low energy density. Thanks to the recent literature studies, it has been revealed that there are improvements in energy density values. Conclusion: It is understood that supercapacitors can be used in many fields, from daily life to the defense industry, taking advantage of their current advantages. It has a very important place, especially in electric and hybrid vehicle technologies. Superior energy storage systems can be developed by creating electrodes used for supercapacitors in composite structures.
