Many historical masonry minarets, or slender towers, with very limited or no reinforcement, were damaged or collapsed during the 1999 Kocaeli and Duzce, Turkey earthquakes. The primary goal of this study is to review the construction practices for historical masonry minarets in Turkey and to discuss the seismic damage observed in those structures. The architectural, material and structural properties of minarets are presented. The dynamic response and vulnerability of unreinforced masonry minarets are investigated using a finite element analysis program.
