This study aims to explore the effects of cultural and ethnic changes and
characteristics of topography on the urban texture and urban memory in multilayered
cities. Exploring the boundaries between the mentioned cultural-physical
layers and sharing an informal workshop experience based on the architectural
representation of these notions are other concerns of the paper.
Initially, the role and potential of informal education programs in architectural
education are mentioned. Afterwards, a detailed review of a workshop held within
the scope of AGU Faculty of Architecture Design Week in the fall semester of 2017-
2018 is discussed. Following a short literature review on the concepts of boundary,
urban memory and spatial representation, which constitute the theoretical
framework of the workshop, all stages of the workshop are systematically
examined. In this context, the scope, purpose and method, participants, process
and outputs of the workshop are explained.
Finally, the effect of informal education programs on the transformation of
conceptual knowledge into architectural representation is evaluated through the
mentioned workshop experience.
