Refik Halid Karay’ın Gurbet Hikâyeleri adlı eserinde, ötekibağlamından incelenmeye müsait yoğun imgeler bulmak mümkündür.Genellikle hikâyelerin mekânı Suriye, zamanı ise XX. yüzyılın başlarıdır.Bundan dolayı, yerel halk olan Araplar ile casus veya asker İngilizler veFransızlar hikâyelerde sıkça geçmektedir. Eserde Araplar ve Avrupalılartespit edilip, yazarın ülkesine duyduğu özlemle, Osmanlı Devletininyıkılışında etkisi bulunan bu gruplara nasıl baktığı incelenmiştir.

Usually the place of the stories is Syria, and the time is the beginning of XX century. That is why the local people, the Arabs and the spies or the soldiers, the English and the French, frequently go on in the stories. In the book Araps and Europeans were identified, with the longing for the author's country, how he looked at these groups who had an influence on the collapse of the Ottoman State.
