Özet

In this chapter, the authors take a more macro view and consider some of the challenges and promises of some of the current trends the authors have observed in the ELA field in the MENA region based on the chapters that have important implications for systemic improvement. Consistently changing political influences on educational policies and institutions as well as clientelism seem to play roles in this, besides the lack of human resources in most countries. The situation is even worse regarding both the competencies of school leaders and informal requirements, such as having connections to certain groups, in some countries like Iraq where the political instability and internal conflicts have been lasting for a while. While salient issues are being addressed, depending heavily on imitating Western experiences or adopting policies from the West does not yield too much improvement.
