Özet

In the growing digital world and with the rise of mobile technology, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have become enormously powerful tools for teaching and learning in schools. Therefore, many schools in different countries provide tablets for all their students and teachers to use in classrooms. This research examines different apps suitable for music learning to promote children’s creative and innovative skills. As music educators, we often ask how we can help our students learn to think in musical ways, essentially through a creative and innovative approach. One of the ways in the current digital world is using technologies, especially educational apps in the music classroom, that would enable music learning and entertainment, along with composition and production. However, choosing the right apps developed with an educational syllabus adapted to children’s specific characteristics and needs is vital for teachers. An educational app must foster active, engaged, meaningful, and socially interactive learning. In this context, various music apps in Google Play were selected according to the highest rating and download scores. Besides, music teachers were asked for their most commonly used music apps in the classroom. In analysing the music apps objectively through a quantitative approach, a reliable rubric called REVEAC (Rubric for the Evaluation of Educational Apps for Preschool Children). A descriptive methodology, including content analysis, was conducted to evaluate the apps within the context of music learning, creativity, composition, and production. The findings were also analysed to determine whether the music apps provide a music pedagogy for developing children’s creative thinking abilities through Torrance’s (1977) three concepts of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility, and originality. The findings of this study and some implications will be discussed in terms of educational content within creativity and innovation in the music classroom, including design, functionality, and technical characteristics.
