The genus Pedicularis L. consists of about 600 species distributed in the cold arctic-alpine high-
altitude mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The Himalaya-Hengduan region is one
of the centers of diversity of Pedicularis, hosting more than 2/3 of the total species. The Alps and
Central Asian mountains are also centres of diversity and endemism for Pedicularis. As a result of the
rearrangement of the genera in the family Scrophulariaceae, the genus Pedicularis was included in the
family Orobanchaceae. Also, Pedicularis is the largest genus of Oronbacheaceae. It is represented by
11 species in Türkiye, two of which are endemic. This genus includes a small number of annual and
usually perennial semi-parasitic species. Annual or biennial species are rare but present. Pedicularis is
characterised by a basal tube and corollas with two lips. Anthers and style are located on the upper lip
(galea). The lower lip is three-lobed. Stem can reach up to 50-70 cm in height. Morphologically, these
species are characterised by large and fleshy roots, usually taproots containing special organs (haustoria)
for feeding on the lymph of nearby plants. Our study aims to present information on the distribution,
systematics and morphological characteristics of the genus Pedicularis in Türkiye.
