Mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract are the second most common tumors following epithelial neoplasms in the gastrointestinal tract and they represent benign or malignant neoplastic proliferations of these elements. In this study, 17 patients diagnosed with mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract in the Pathology Department of Uludag University Faculty of Medicine were included in the study and clinical and histopathologic properties of the tumors were evaluated. The cases were evaluated according to age, sex, location, tumor size, cellularity, necrosis and mitosis. Tumors were stained with S100, NSE, SMA and Desmin immunohistochemical stains, in addition to the conventional stains like Hematoxylene-Eosin, Masson Trichrome and Van Gieson. Histopathologic examination revealed 12 malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors, two benign stromal tumor, one liposarcoma, one lipoma and one atypical lipoma.
