"My students never answer my questions. All I get is blank looks. I don’t know why. I’m sure my questions are quite clear”. Sound familiar? I know this feeling all too well. At first, I thought my students were just shy or couldn’t be bothered answering. I’ve also observed this happening very often during teaching practice observations. In fact, it was unanswered teacher questions that initially sparked my interest in reflection on classroom interaction patterns. Small positive changes in a teacher’s questioning behaviour can bring about larger positive changes in students’ answers.
Just like Newt Scamander in the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and his suitcase of spells, English teachers need a suitcase full of useful questioning strategies. So, today I want to share with you a quick recipe for asking fantastic teacher questions to get fantastic student responses.
