Özet

The church ruins, located approximately 50 m off the shore of Lake Iznik and at a depth of 2 m within the borders of the Iznik District of Bursa Province, were discovered in 2014. Archaeological studies, which began with underwater surveys in 2015, evolved into underwater excavations in 2016 and have continued uninterrupted until today. The three-nave basilica-planned building extends in the east-west direction and consists of an apse and pastophoria rooms in the east and a narthex and atrium in the west. There is a U-shaped structure in the atrium section, which we think is the deep baptisterium. During the excavations that started in 2016, were carried out in the pastophoria rooms, west of the bema wall, narthex and atrium. According to the first excavation results, the structure was built towards the end of the 4th century AD and was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1065. With the rising water levels towards the middle of the 13th century, it was completely abandoned and forgotten. According to the data obtained to date, this church must be the famous Church of the Holy Fathers, built in the area where the meeting was held in memory of the First Council of Nicaea. The topic of the article is the temporary protection, and reinforcement works carried out in the church up to the present day.
