Saint Anthony the Great of Egypt (251–356), one of the founding figures of Christian mysticism, from theological and historical perspectives. Anthony is regarded not only as an individual mystic but also as a pioneer in the institutionalization of Christian monasticism. The study first addresses the conceptual framework of mysticism and then analyzes Anthony’s life, as of his childhood and succeedingly the process described as the “urbanization of the desert” covered by his lifespan. In particular, his struggle with demons, his understanding of renunciation, his adherence to the Scripture, and his emphasis on spiritual discernment (diakrisis) are presented as the cornerstones of his mystical pedagogy. Anthony’s demonic experiences are evaluated in light of Evagrius’s theory of logismoi, thereby shedding light on the psychological elements in Christian mysticism. In addition, Anthony’s model of anchoritic life contributed to the transformation of eremitic withdrawal into a dynamic structure that gradually brought communities together; combined with Pachomius’s cenobitic order, this development played a formative role for Eastern and Western monastic traditions. From a theological perspective, the study also focuses on the balance between body and soul, theodicy, a Christ-centered mystical approach, and the harmony between the Church and individual mystical experience. As a result, Anthony is evaluated both as a epitome of mystical purification and as a foundational exemplar of the Christian mystical tradition; to this end his legacy in relation is comprehensively presented in terms of its historical continuity and its impact on modern studies of mysticism.
