This article examines the theory of embodied cognition, which has gained increasing prominence as an alternative approach in contemporary philosophy of mind, particularly since the 1990s. Aiming to overcome the traditional mind–body dualism, this approach conceives consciousness not as a purely brain-centered process but as a holistic interaction of body, environment, and action. The article first highlights the Cartesian roots of classical philosophy of mind, which conceptualize the mind as an abstract and disembodied subject. It then discusses the fundamental relationship between body and consciousness within the framework of phenomenology, with particular emphasis on Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of perception. The subsequent sections underscore the role of the body in the constitution of pre-reflective experience. Through concepts such as bodily posture, spatial perception, proprioception, and body schema, the article analyzes the body’s constitutive function in the formation of experience. In the section on embodied semantics, it is argued that the body also plays a foundational role in abstract concepts, mathematical reasoning, and logical thought. The theory of embodied cognition maintains that cognition is not a phenomenon localized solely in the brain but a dynamic process continuously constructed through the body’s sensory, motor, and environmental engagements. Recognizing the central role of the body in cognitive processes opens new possibilities across a wide range of fields, from artificial intelligence research to pedagogy and psychology, as well as from ethical debates to gender studies. The article concludes by suggesting that the future of contemporary philosophy of mind is moving toward a more holistic and multidimensional horizon through the perspective of embodied consciousness.
