This course addresses public space at city, neighbourhood, and site-specific scales in line with the policy documents, assessment tools, and inclusive design guides developed by UN-Habitat. Within the course, tools for conducting public space inventories, performing quantitative and qualitative assessments, and translating these findings into design decisions are examined through criteria such as safety, accessibility, legibility, and inclusivity, with particular attention to children, girls, and vulnerable groups through participatory design methods. The course also integrates the use of public space as a policy and strategic instrument for local governments, neighbourhood-level quality assessments, and a holistic urban project process extending from analysis to design through case-based examples.
