There are a variety of animal originated local and famous products in Turkey. Some of these products are protected under geographical indications. There are 843 registered and applied GI products and approximately 20% of these are animal products. Beside of meat meals, cheeses are the most registered animal origin products in Turkey. Consumers prefer to buy GI cheeses among others. Honey is an important local animal product as well.  Six Turkish animal originated product has been applied for EU registration. Turkish GI legislation is highly harmonized with EU legislation. However, especially certification and control issues have some important differences. There is no certification system and accredited control body in Turkey.

There are some important factors for the success of a GI product. These are; reputation and specificity of the product; existence and power of the organization; traceability and control and content of the GI registration file. Management is the key factor among the others.
