Abstract

It has been recognized that an ordinary exhaust system makes high contribution to environmental noise so that the vehicle noise should be reduced for less traffic stream noise. In this study, acoustic behaviour of a real exhaust system used on a passenger car has been modelled by the Finite Element (FEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) using SYSNOISE Computational Vibro-Acoustics software. The effects of porous material and perforated pipes on acoustic performance of the exhaust system have been investigated by FEM. In addition, the acoustic performance of the exhaust system without porous material and perforated pipes has been computed simultaneously by FEM and BEM in order to check the accuracy of the numerical predictions.
