Purpose: Aim of this study was to investigate muscle strength, endurance and coordination of the knee in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Materials and methods: Thirty five women with unilateral PFPS and twenty healthy women participated in the study. Pain levels during ascending and descending stairs and squatting, were evaluated using numeric pain scale. The Quadriceps and Hamstring isokinetic muscle strength were assessed at the velocity of 60 degrees/sec and 180 degrees/sec. Monitored Rehab Systems-Functional Squat System was used for coordination and endurance evaluation. For functional status of the patients Kujala Patellofemoral Score was used. Results: The most severe pain was recorded during squatting in the PFPS group. Quadriceps Femoris (p=0.01) and Hamstring (p=0.04) isokinetic muscle strength results were better in the healthy group compared to PFPS group in both effected and non-effected sides. Significant difference was found in PFPS group's eccentric coordination in effected and non-effected sides (p=0.01). Endurance results were better in the dominant side of the healthy group when compared with the effected side of the PFPS group (p=0.01). Kujala score was 58.17 +/- 16.55 in PFPS group. Conclusion: In addition to decreased muscle strength and functional status, eccentric coordination and endurance also change in PFPS.
