Project Abstract

Historical buildings, which are our cultural heritage for thousands of years, are very important and valuable. It is an inevitable task for us to transfer these constructions from the present day to the future. For this reason, in order to be able to determine the intervention methods to be carried out for this structure, it is necessary to correctly diagnose the current situation of the structures. These constructions have been affected by many earthquakes, fires, wars and natural disasters and have experienced many interventions over time.

The decisions taken in the international workshop entitled "Principles for the Analysis, Conservation and Structural Restoration of Architectural Heritage" adopted by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) in the 14th General Assembly in 2003 is used in order to determine the method of the project. According to this; a full understanding of the structural and material characteristics is required in conservation practice. Information is essential on the structure in its original and earlier states, on the techniques that were used in the construction, on the alterations and their effects, on the phenomena that have occurred, and, finally, on its present state. Diagnosis is based on historical, qualitative and quantitative approaches.

The construction date (19th century) of the studied churches are choosen in the same period.  In this study, Bursa Dereköy, Aydınpınar Churches and Balikesir Erdek Ballıpınar Churche was studied. Physical, chemical and mechanical tests were carried out by taking mortar, stone and plaster from the inside and outside walls of the churches.

The compression and elastic modulus of the walls were calculated by using flatjack tests.  With operational modal analysis method, vibration tests are carried out by placing high sensitive accelerometers in the structure and natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure were analysed. The datas obtained from the all test results were used in the finite element models. Static and dynamic behaviour of the structures were performed. Finally, the intervention methods were determined according to all results.

The analyses of historical structures are so important because most of our country is in the earthquake region. The most of the conservation works in our country was applied without using detail laboratory tests and numerical analysis methods. Before determination of the strengthening and conservation methods of the structure, tests must have been done and restoration works are made with the conscious on historical structures. For that reason, we aim to fulfill our professional responsibilities as a result of an extensive work.
