Contributions of universities to local economy: The case study of Uludag University

Abstract:

Universities have a positive influence on the country and city in terms of cultural and economic aspects. Especially, universities create economic vitality due to student expenditures in the cities where they located. In this study, it is examined that Bursa Uludağ University creates the employment effect of 9.978.2 people in Bursa’s economy through direct, indirect, and stimulated contributions. In addition, it is analyzed the expenditures and contributions of students in the campuses of Görükle, Ali Osman Sönmez and Fethiye Theology Faculty campuses of Bursa Uludağ University in Bursa. Within this scope, in the 2016-2017 academic year, 381 students studying at graduate and undergraduate degrees in central campuses of Bursa Uludağ University were surveyed, and the data were analyzed via SPSS statistical software program. The obtained results indicate that each student’s average monthly expenditure is 779.7 TL and total estimated contribution of students to the Bursa city’s economy is 54.592.254.9 TL per year.
