Abstract:

Main topic analyzed in this theses is, modernization process and how this process influence the Uygur Society and cultural changes happened in this process. Modernization is characterized by its radical changes in all the aspects of economics, politics and social life. Modernization, in Sociology, is the transformation from a traditional, rural, agrarian society to a secular, urban, industrial society. According to modernization theory, Western Society is considered as modern society, and outside the Western Society, is considered as traditional society. The modernization process of Uygur Society can be divided into two periods. In the early twentieth century, Uyghurs mainly influenced by Jadidism. The second period of Uyghur's modernization was begun since the establishment of Peoples Republic of China. In modernization process, educational, industrial changes had happened, production mode, family constracture also had changed. Through globalization, popular culture and consumerism influenced the Uyghur culture. During this period, "cultural crisi" has been felt by Uyghur society, because all the traditional value system gradually blurred. Because everything is rapidly changing, traditional value system is no more suitable to this new modern world. Identity cirisis and insecurity become the main reflexivity of this modern world. In the process of modernization, Uyghur Society should have clear understanding of their core value and reinterpret the traditional culture, should change their passiveness into initiative actions.
