Abstract:The well-known Pisarenko harmonic decomposition (PHD) method and the k-PHD method, which is a generalization of the PHD method, are considered for frequency estimation of a single real random-phased sinusoid in noise. With the use of a simple variance analysis technique, exact expressions of the PHD and k-PHD variances of frequency are derived. Approximate PHD and k-PHD variance formulas which are valid for sufficiently large data lengths and high signal-to-noise ratios are also given. Computer simulations are included to corroborate the theoretical developments.
