Verbascum olympicum Boiss. (Scrophulariaceae) is one of the prioneer species a settled on destroyed areas such an soad sides, building areas and mining in the alpine and subalpine belt of Mount Uludağ. In this study, toxic effects of five different metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni ve Zn) on seed germination and early seedling development of Verbascum olympicum (Scrophulariaceae) were investigated. In general, the germination percentage decreased with increasing concentrations of metal. Atypical germinations were observed at the concentrations of 500 µM of Cd, Cu and Ni, and 250 µM of Cr, and 1250 µM of Zn and above concentrations of these. Root length compared to control decreased with increasing concentrations of the metals. Seedling length was increased compared to control in general. Germination time was prolonged with increasing concentrations. Althought germination rates were not affected, root elongated was decreased depending on metal concentrations.
