Abstract:The positive effect of music on humans has been proven in research. Music which has been used akin to therapy since ancient times and it is seen as a useful training vehicle in the socialization process of mentally disabled individuals exhibiting various problem behaviours. Through the music events organized by the group, the individuals communicate with each other, participate in the music events they are interested in, show their inclination in various forms and experience a sense of accomplishment through performance. In order to examine the validity of the hypothesis that music education could be an effective method in the socialization process of the students with mentally disabilities, 21 students of 34 total students were an experimental group and 13 students were sampled in a control group who are educated in a special education school in Bursa. The experimental group performed music work for 10 weeks and the control group was not included in any ımısic activity. The school social behaviour scale of Merreli (1 993) which translated into Turkish by Yukay Yüksel (2009) was applied to the groups as pre-posttest. As a result of study, it was found that the applied ımısic education did not change the social competence levels of mentally disabled students but it was effective in reducing negative social behaviours.
