With the rapid change in communication technologies and globalization, the social structure has changed and social needs have become different. This change had brought about a requirement that educational institutions to raise entrepreneurial individuals who can produce information, use it functionally, solve problems and think critically. Training of individuals with these qualifications seems possible only with the help of equipped teachers who constantly update themselves. In this context, the main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the designed professional learning community on the professional development of social studies teachers and students’ academic achievement. Therefore, in this study, a design-based research approach was used. The participants of the research are social ix studies teachers. The quantitative dimension of the study was conducted with 386 participants, but in its qualitative dimension, it was worked with 8 social studies teachers. In the study, scale, observation, and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection techniques. Findings obtained from the study proved that the designed professional learning community positively affects the professional development of teachers and increases students’ academic achievement. Based on these findings, it was concluded that there is a positive relationship between participation in vocational learning community and student academic achievement. When these results are taken into consideration; implications derived from this study are to extend school-based professional learning community to all other branches and to plan professional development training as long-term training taking the needs of the field into account.
