Effects of Lavandula stoechas Linne subsp. stoechas essential oils on oxidan and anti-oxidan systems in streptozotocin-induced type I diabetic rats

In this study, effects of Lavandula stoechas subsp. stoechas essential oil on blood glucose, oxidan and antioxidan systems in one dose stz-induced Type I diabetic rats were investigated. Forty Wistar male rats randomly divided into four groups: control (K), control + L. stoechas oil (K+LSY), Diabetes (D), Diyabetes + L. stoechas oil (D + LSY). After the induction of diabetes, L. stoechas oil was injected to rats intraperitoneally for twenty days. At the end of the studies, trigliseride, total cholesterol and tissue MDA levels were decreased and plasma GPX, paraoxanase (PON1) and arilesterase (ARE) enzyme activities were increased in the K+LSY group compared to the K group. Blood glucose, total cholesterole, trigliseride, tissue MDA levels were decreased and serum insulin, HDL-K, plasma SOD, paraoxanase (PON1), arilesterase (ARE) enzyme activities were increased in the D+LYS group compared to the D group. We conclude that Lavandula stoechas subsp. stoechas oil has antihyperglysemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidan effects and also could have use as a protective and/or therapeutic agent against oxidative stress in Type 1 Diabetes in addition to treatment.
