In this study austempering of ductile cast irons is taken into consideration and the machinability of austempered ductile cast irons is investigated. As their convenience of cost and conception utility, austempered ductile cast irons are considered to be as useful as wrought steel in technology.In addition to this austempered ductile irons also demonsrate good wear resisitance. Spherical graphite ductile irons have better mechanical properties than that as- cast ductile irons.And we can even improve their metallurgical quality by austempering heat treatment. In spite of their lower machinibility in comprassion with normal ductile irons, spherical graphite ductile irons show better machinibility than that steel components (having the same wear resistance). In this study, identically same 16 samples were tested by using CNMA TT1300 carbide cutting tool. During the tests, heat treatment cyles and cooling times were changed in order to make 8 different types of sample. Machinability of these samples are then determined by measuring their surface roughnesses, tooling wear land and cutting forces.
