Abstract:

Land topography is of great concern for selection of surface irrigation methods. When the topographical conditions are not considered, some problems such as water loss, soil erosion and leaching of useful nutrients resulting yield reduce would occur. A successful application of surface irrigation methods and high irrigation performance depend mostly on land leveling project which is crucial for land preparation and appropriateness for irrigation. In this study, using possibilities of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in determining the different leveling plane slopes and cut and fill volume which are the main criteria for land leveling design were investigated and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) supported results were compared with the results obtained by traditional methods in the context of land leveling project design. As a result of study, more reliable results were obtained by Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for calculation of centroid, non-square area in irregularly shaped fields and cut and fill volumes and achievement of more efficient and easier database creation and design was realized.
