Today, concept learning and teaching is a subject of considerable research. The concept teaching which is frequently encountered especially in the field of Science is also important for the Social Studies course in terms of its content. Social Studies course, which is formed by the integration of many disciplines, naturally incorporates the unique concepts of each discipline. However, it is not easy to acquire each concept to students. In particular, it can be said that the integration of any concept into the culture of the society or that the concept has a social meaning is a compelling factor for the people who are not educated in the culture of that society to learn these concepts. In the present study, it is assumed that whether some concepts have been learned before will affect new learning and consequently academic achievement and motivation. Within the scope of the Life Science course, the concepts that are subject to the study have been taught starting from the first grade. The concepts of flag and anthem are expected to be given in the first year and the concept of the republic in the third year. Similarly, the concepts of republic, democracy, national sovereignty and independence are the concepts that are included in the 4th year Life Science course content. Research on immigrants, especially from the 1st year students who receive education in Turkey are expected to have effect on the earlier encounter with these concepts and reach Grade 5 Active Citizenship unit at the domain level unit gains that they know the concepts. From this point of view, the aim of the present study is to examine the effect of learning levels of the concepts of sovereignty, independence, flag, capital, republic, democracy in the 5th grade Active Citizenship unit on academic achievement and motivation.
