Teucrium leucocladum Boiss. subsp. leucocladum in type1 diabetic rats: Effects on the oxidative and antioxidative systems

Nowadays, Teucrium lecocladum plant is one of the most ancient herbal drugs grown in the world, which are gaining popularity as medicaments from time immemorial within Mediterranean countries and its extract is rich in natural antioxidants. The current study was designed to test the antioxidative and antidiabetic activities of Teucrium lecocladum plant on hypoglycemic, oxidative–antioxidative systems in streptozotocin-induced (65mg/kg) diabetic rats. Wistar rats were divided into four groups; Control(C), Control+Teucrium lecocladum (C+TL), Diabet (D), Diabet+ Teucrium lecocladum (D+TL). Teucrium lecocladum extract reduced enhanced tissue and plasma malondialdehyde levels and increased the reduced insulin. Also serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activity, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and whole blood glutathione peroxidase enzyme quantitative were significantly increased in the C+ TL, D+Tl groups. In conclusion, this paper demonstrates that Teucrium lecocladum plant extract manifest antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic effects, reduced the lipid peroxidation process and enhanced the antioxidative defense system in an experimental diabetic model.
