Abstract:The foundation establishment is one of the most rooted institutions in Islamic civilization and Muslim societies from past to present. The foundation culture, whose foundations were laid with the hadith of "sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity)" in the time of the Prophet, and accepted as goodwill among Muslims, has developed and systematized in time and has become one of the cornerstones of Islamic civilization. The foundation establishment was introduced to the Balkans by the Ottoman State and the Macedonian cities were built with the foundations. Foundations have spread to all areas of religion, education, socio-cultural and economic life in the Islamic World and Ottoman society. In this study, 220 foundations that were established in Macedonia from the Tanzimat period to the end of the Ottoman rule and whose endowments were reached were examined. The distribution of foundations in cities, their service areas, income and expenditure sources are examined. On the other hand, the contributions of foundations to socio-cultural and economic life were researched; How the movable and real estate foundation properties are operated, who is employed in the foundation, the salaries of the employees, maintenance and repair costs are examined. In addition, detailed information has been given in the waqfs/foundations regarding the expenditures made in the field of religion, education, tasawwuf, social and municipal services; Macedonian foundations have been evaluated in the light of these findings.
