Catechisms (ilmihals) in the XIXth century Kazakh literature and their theological content

In this paper the popular catechism books (ilmihal) that take important place in Kazakh religious/national literature have been studied in terms of catechism writing tradition and in particular the contents of aforementioned catechism books have been inroduced and analyzed. The paper consists of two chapters and conclusion. The first chapter includes a general introduction regarding the genre of catechism work and it also consists short information regarding historical process of catechism (its prevalence from Ottoman to Idel-Ural region and Turkestan), the rise of catechism in the Kazakh literature, socio-cultural background of the era and the life of catechism authors and their works. The Second chapter includes a theological evaluation and an analysis regarding Musulmanşılıkın Tutkası of Ibıray Altınsarin who wrote the first versions of catechism genre in Kazakh literature in XIXth century and Şakarim Kudayberduli's Musulmandık Şartı. Also this chapter analyzes theological subjects of aforementioned works comparatively in the light of classical Kalam resources.
